What's Happening at Mercer County Conservation District 

 

"Sandy Creek Watershed Educational Series: An Interactive Series to Discover the Sandy Creek Watershed and all it has to Offer"

 

Come join the Mercer County Conservation District in an educational series to "get you outside to come alive" and experience many of the unique features and areas within the watershed around Maurice K. Goddard State Park. This series hopes to spark interest in the community and truly experience all the opportunities is has to offer.

 

This series is made possible due to funding from: PA Lake Management Society, C-SAW, DEP Growing Greener, and the Mercer County Conservation District.

 

This is a 4 part series; if you attend all 4 programs you get a commemorative sandy creek watershed wooden carved magnet.

 

Pre-registration for the entire series is required through the Mercer County Conservation District by May 15th to be eligible for the commemorative coin. If you plan to attend some, but not all programs, please pre-register by the Monday before the program date. Call 724-662-2242 to pre-register and for details.

 

Program Dates, Topics, and Cooperating Agencies

 
 

* Thursday, May 17th @ Maurice K. Goddard Launch 3 Pavilion

 

Come join the Mercer County Conservation District staff and Maurice K. Goddard State Park Staff as we showcase the sandy creek watershed, what it is, its role in the environment and local community. We will also discuss the state park system and the importance of working together for a common goal. After the introductions to the series, we will then transition into kayaking and experiencing one of the main bodies of water in the Sandy Creek Watershed, Lake Wilhelm. Kayak space is limited due to kayaks available and safety requirements for this portion of the program.

 
Time: 6 PM to 9 PM
6 PM to 7 PM "What is a Watershed" and Sandy Creek Series Introduction

7 PM to 9:30 PM Experiencing Lake Wilhelm by Kayak

Space is limited for this portion of the program due to safety requirements and boats available. Participants must be at least 16 years old.  Pre-registration for this single program is due by May 14th.
 
 

* Thursday, May 24th @ Maurice K. Goddard Launch 2 Pavilion


Come join the Mercer County Conservation District Staff and Venango Conservation District's Watershed Specialist Tim Hummell as we showcase the importance of water quality and discover ways to monitoring it.  We will have the opportunity to get into the stream and actively sample for macro-invertebrates (aquatic insects) to assess stream health.  You will learn the basics to macroinvertebrate sampling and how these organisms are great indicators of stream health.

 
Time: 6 PM to 8 PM
Pre-registration for this single program is due by May 21st.

* Thursday, May 31st @ Stoneboro Firehall


Come join the Mercer County Conservation District Staff, Crawford County Conservation District's Brian Pilarick, and SEAGrant Representatives for an interactive program highlighting the differences between natives and invasives.  You will have the opportunity to learn about current invasive issues in the Sandy Creek Watershed and ways to get involved.

 
Time: 6 PM to 8 PM
Pre-registration for this single program is due by May 28th.
 
 
 *Saturday, June 2nd "Sandy Creek Watershed Celebration Day"
 
Come celebrate the series and this watershed for our big watershed celebration day.  We will have 3 different stops to showcase all the different topics you learned about throughout the series: macroinvertebrate sampling, bird watching and eagle discovery, and floating pontoon classroom tour locating current aquatic invasive issues.  
 
Time: 9 AM to 1:45 PM
You must call in to pre-register and get assigned your first stop on your tour.  You will travel between stations every hour.  Deadline to register is May 28th.
 
The program will end with a picnic celebration at the Stoneboro Lake Pavilion at 1 PM after the completion of the various stops around Lake Wilhelm.
