County Natural Resources - Watersheds

What is a watershed?
It is an area of land that catches rain and/or snow and
drains into a wetland, stream, or groundwater.

Watersheds of Mercer County
Mercer County is part of the Ohio River Basin.  Each basin is divided into sub-basins, and these are divided into watersheds.  Mercer County consists of 100 small watersheds that make up the Ohio River and Allegheny sub-basins.  They range in size from 1.75 acres to over 31,000 acres.  The Ohio River and Allegheny sub-basins drain 364,596 acres and 71,867 acres respectively in Mercer County.  Within the Ohio River sub-basin is most notably the Shenango River Watershed.  It receives water from streams such as the Little Shenango River, Pymatuning Creek, Otter Creek, Coolsping Creek, and  Neshannock Creek and drains 310,483 acres of the county.

Pennsylvania's streams face many challenges including decreased flow, pollution from historic industrial or mining activities, increased nutrients and sedimentation, and invasive species.  These challenges also threaten the social, physical, and economic well being of Pennsylvania.  Local watershed groups can, and do, affect positive changes in our streams and communities.  Please take some time to visit the groups actively involved in the management of our waters or if you are interested in forming a watershed group please contact us at
