Programs - Dirt & Gravel Roads
The Conservation District and local Quality Assurance Board make available state funding and technical support to municipalities and state agencies that maintain dirt and gravel roads.  Funding  is available to eligible entities for environmentally sensitive maintenance practices and approved  products that correct stream pollution problems related to the roadway.
Trout Unlimited first brought attention to sediment pollution resulting from unpaved road runoff in 1991.  As a result, a Task Force was created to investigate the significance of the problem and in the summers of 1996-1998 Trout Unlimited volunteers set out to identify pollution sites throughout the state.  Furthermore, the Task Force helped in establishing the State Conservation Commission’s Dirt and Gravel Roads Program through legislation known as Section 9106 of the PA Vehicle Code.  The Dirt and Gravel Roads Program was created in 1997 and received its first funding allocations in 1998.
