Nutrient Management
District staff work with farmers and private nutrient management planners to develop plans that meet the requirements of Act 38, Pennsylvania’s Nutrient Management Law. Act 38 requires Concentrated Animal Operations (CAOs) to develop and implement approved nutrient management plans. A CAO is an operation that has greater than 2,000 pounds of live animal weight per acre of land available for manure application. These plans address the economic use of manure nutrients and nutrient related water quality issues. Technicians provide plan review and implementation assistance for Act 38 nutrient management plans, coordinate with natural resource agencies for best management practice design, and help farms obtain financial assistance for plan development and implementation.
